Intimate Journeys: A Film Secession Conversation

The four-chapter series of films in this Room explores the Cinematic Legacies of Flemish Art through encounters in Antwerp with filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin. Chapter One ("Intimate Journeys") develops themes explored in our full Exhibition through a discussion of Desplechin films such as My Sex Life... (1996) and My Golden Days (2015). Chapter Two addresses The Flemish Baroque through the paintings in the depot of Antwerp's Royal Museum of Fine Arts and the Cathedral of Our Lady. Chapter Three ("From Van Eyck to Rubens") continues the discussion through conversations with paintings in the galleries of the Royal Museum. Finally, Chapter Four looks at the application of all of these ideas in A Christmas Tale (2008), which was shot and set in French Flanders. (Antwerp, July 2025)
